St. John’s Public Safety Ministry provides information on the following event for informational purposes. We are not organizers, nor does our ministry endorse any of the proposed charter amendments that are likely to appear on the ballot for the Minneapolis city elections in November.
MARCH (Multifaith Anti-Racism, Change, & Healing), with Reclaim the Block and Yes4Minneapolis, is sponsoring a multi-faith gathering on July 27, 6-8pm, at Lake Nokomis to learn how religious communities can support the proposed amendment to the Minneapolis charter.
Would you be willing to join us and share this information with your networks?
Do your faith or spiritual practice compel you to be part of building a world in which all people are stable, well-resourced, and thriving?
Do you believe we need to create alternative structures to policing that can keep our communities safe and address harm in transformative ways?
Then join MARCH (Multifaith Anti-Racism, Change, and Healing), Sacred Solidarity Network, Reclaim the Block, and Yes4Minneapolis for this multi-faith gathering to explore how people of faith and conviction can take action this year in support of the Charter Amendment that would allow us to create a Department of Public Safety in Minneapolis instead of the current police-only approach.
WHO THIS EVENT IS FOR: Anyone who considers themselves a person of faith or spiritual conviction, and who would like to learn more–and possibly take action–to support the Minneapolis charter amendment. While we will be presenting the issues from an abolitionist perspective, we welcome all those who are new to learning about abolition and bring questions asked in good faith.
AGENDA: During our time together, we will learn about the proposed Charter Amendment through an abolitionist lens; hear about next steps and ways to take action in the community-wide campaign to build buy-in and support; and reflect on our own connection to the issues through our many faiths and spiritual traditions.
LOCATION: We will gather outdoors next to Lake Nokomis at the end of 50th St and E Nokomis Lake Parkway. Please bring a chair or blanket to sit on. There is ample parking nearby in a public lot and on E Nokomis Lake Pkwy; when you arrive, there is a very short walk (20-30 feet) on a paved path to get to the grass where we are meeting.
RAIN PLAN: We will meet on zoom if there is heavy rain or storms. We will email participants with a participation link by noon on the day of the event if there is a venue change.
WHAT TO BRING: Please bring a chair or blanket to sit on. Also consider attending with a group of fellow members of your sangha, congregation, masjid, or church! We will provide light snacks. If you would like to contribute something for others to eat or drink, too, we would welcome that generosity!
