Thursday, May 27, 7pm
You’re invited to a talkback of the documentary, Stories I Didn’t Know, with filmmaker and settler descendent, Rita Davern, and Santee Dakota tribal member, Ramona Kitto Stately, both of whom are pivotal in the film. You may remember Ramona’s impactful talk at an adult forum a few years ago, tracing her family’s experience in the trials and forced march of the 1862 Dakota war. Stories I Didn’t Know traces Rita’s journey to find out how her grandfather came to purchase former Dakota land, what had happened since, and what she could do to right the wrongs of the past. Rita’s journey from vague curiosity to clear-eyed truth telling is inspiring. And – it’s not often that we have two of the filmmakers living in our metro area! Check out the trailer here.
This event is free; however, you will need to register at this Eventbrite link. You will be sent a confirmation with the zoom link for the Artist Talk and a separate link to view the film will be sent on May 22, which will let you view it in the window of May 22 – 29. Please register by May 26 so you’ll have time to see the film before the talk!
