Susan J. Barnes came to St. John’s in 2012 from her native Texas, where she had served nearly eleven years as an associate at St. Matthew’s and then held a brief stint at Christ Church Cathedral, where she was baptized and reared. Her work in ministry runs the gamut from mission and outreach, to newcomer welcome, to women’s and family ministry, to contemplative Bible studies. She earned her Masters of Divinity in 2001 from the Seminary of the Southwest. Susan was called to ordained ministry from her work as an art historian and art museum professional. She has degrees in art history from Rice (B.A.) and New York University (M.A., PhD.);  worked in museums in Washington, D.C., Raleigh, Dallas and Houston; and has publications which include studies of Anthony van Dyck. She enjoys travel and the loving company of family and friends, including that of her beloved, Claudia Helt. Her hobbies include wheel-thrown ceramics, walking and single-shell sculling.
