Earth Month Invitation

Happy Earth Month!  While COVID-19 prevents us from celebrating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day as we were planning this year, we are pivoting – as we all have learned to do with so many aspects of our lives during these unprecedented times. During April (Earth Month), and especially as we approach Earth Day this Wednesday, April 22, we encourage folks to head outdoors (safely) and post on St. John’s Community Group (closed Facebook group) a photo, caption, reflection, prayer, or poem. Take time to soak in the emerging life and colors of spring, smell the aroma of soil and early blossoms, and hear the calls of birds and frogs – and share that beauty and wonder with our St. John’s community. When the pandemic subsides, we plan to host a nature walk TOGETHER – but until then, keep an eye out for the beauty and wonder of nature. Take care and stay safe.

Why Earth Day?

On April 22, 1970, nearly one in ten Americans took to the streets to demand an end to the pollution of the air, water, and land. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day, fifty years that have seen both sweeping environmental action in response to the 20 million Americans calling for protection of our shared home–and deep failure. And now here we are, 50 years later, on a precipice of history. Scientists tell us we have ten years to make sweeping changes to decarbonize our entire world in order to ensure a habitable planet. The 2020 election is looming, with implications for what leaders will take the sweeping changes needed to change our system, both at the national and state level. A deadly pandemic is devastating our world, and as in the climate crisis, the poorest and most vulnerable are most at risk. In this context, we invite you and your faith community to join Earth Day 2020. While we are no longer able to gather with thousands in order to strike and march for climate, we can gather together online to connect, listen, share, and take collective action for a healthy world for all.

On the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, join us for a virtual gathering of prayer, storytelling, art, and wisdom from our diverse spiritual teachings that speak to this current moment of crisis.

This moment of pandemic reminds us how deeply connected we are to each other and to the earth. We know that many of us are suffering, and we are finding new ways to care for one another and for our planet. We invite you to connect and support one other as we navigate this difficult time, and to send a powerful message to decision-makers that climate justice is still a top priority. We’ll be broadcasting from 1-3pm; come when you are able and invite a friend! Register here!
