How the Word is Passed
“The history of slavery is the history of the United States. It was not peripheral to our founding; it was central to it. It is not irrelevant to our contemporary society; it created it.” –Clint Smith. This is the “word” that must be passed down. Throughout the month of January and into February the Thursday Night book group will meet (virtually) to discuss “How the Word is Passed”, a new book by Clint Smith. Smith takes us to slavery sites in the United States and western Africa that still echo with the “word” (New Orleans (LA), Monticello (Charlottesville, VA), The Whitney Plantation (Wallace, LA), Angola Prison (LA), Blandford Cemetery (Petersburg, VA), Galveston Island (TX), New York City, Goree Island (Senegal).) What he hears and sees at these sites will be eye-opening for some, challenging for others, but important for all of us as truth-tellers. Michael Walters will host the virtual meeting. Dates: Jan 6, 13, 20, 27, and Feb. 3. Time: 7 pm.
