Colleen Connolly Swope is a second-year postulant toward Holy Orders/Diaconate. She will be married to husband Charles for 20 years this coming October. They’ve been members of St John the Evangelist (St Paul) since Lent of 2012. Colleen loves being a ‘cat mom’ to two rescue kitties: Henry, a five-year-old grey domestic short-hair and Bertram, an eight-year-old Japanese Bobtail. They all live in St Paul overlooking the bluffs of the Mississippi River.
At St John the Evangelist, Colleen has led the Faith in Action ministries, has had a seat on the Vestry, been a part of Altar Guild, participated as a Reader and Daily Office leader, a Eucharistic Minister, a Godly Play teacher, and Acolyte. Her understanding of the Liturgy grew as she took part in the preparation of services.
All of this work culminated in her realization that she had a call for the Diaconate. She began to understand the why of what she was doing in all of these activities. In her mind’s eye, Colleen kept seeing the priest’s stole move to being a deacon’s stole. She realized that God was saying there is more for you to do. As a child of a single mom with five siblings, Colleen has always known what her mother accomplished (home, food, love!) could probably not be done today. Seeing the struggle of parents wanting better for their children, or fixed income elders deserving more for their ‘golden’ years, drives much of what she sees as her role. Under the direction of the Reverend Deacon Rex McKee, Colleen looks forward to learning how to work stronger with a congregation in reaching out to the world and living God’s Word.
Please give Colleen a warm welcome to St. John’s!
